From the rolling hills of the Driftless Area, up to the port of Superior to the shores of Lake Michigan history is deeply intertwined with a proud legacy of military service and unwavering patriotism. Generations of Wisconsinites have answered the nation’s call with courage and distinction, stepping forward to defend freedom in times of peace and conflict alike. From the legendary “Iron Brigade” of the Civil War—whose stubborn valor on the battlefields of Gettysburg and Antietam cemented their place in American lore—to the courageous aviators, sailors, soldiers, and Marines of the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the modern era, the state’s citizens have consistently demonstrated selflessness and grit. Beyond their time in uniform, these veterans have returned home to build communities, shape local leadership, and foster a deep culture of remembrance. Today, Wisconsin honors these brave individuals not only through enduring memorials and vibrant veterans’ organizations, but through a collective, daily gratitude for the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens who achieved extraordinary things in defense of the United States.
